A thermostat setting is not necessarily the temperature inside wrapped unions. Sensor placement, insulation, airflow, mat contact, day/night cycling, and calibration can create a meaningful difference. Before loading valuable grafts, run the empty setup long enough to observe the range at the intended union position and keep water away from electrical connections.
What the temperature table cannot predict
- Whether the scion and stock are biologically compatible.
- Whether the cambial edges were aligned and held still.
- Whether the wood was alive, hydrated, disease-free, and truly dormant.
- Whether free water, oxygen limitation, or contamination will cause decay.
- Whether warming the union will push buds before roots can support growth.
