- Collect while dormant: Use local phenology rather than a universal calendar month. Collect before visible bud swell and label the cultivar, tree, source, and date immediately.
- Clean Shoots: Wipe shoots gently with a clean, slightly damp paper towel or rinse with fresh water to remove surface dirt and fungal spores, then allow to air-dry completely before packing.
- Control surface moisture: Keep the wood from drying without leaving free water in the package. Use a clean sealed bag and inspect for condensation, shriveling, odor, softness, or surface growth.
- Maintain Constant 34°F–38°F (1°C–3°C): Store in the coldest section of a clean refrigerator (monitor temperature and humidity fluctuations with an accurate digital hygrometer thermometer sensor).
