The Hot-Callusing Pipe Technique

For stone fruits and nuts that require warm callusing temperatures (70°F+) while rootstock roots must remain dormant and cold (35°F–45°F), commercial propagators use hot-callusing pipes or indoor bench setups utilizing a digital seedling heat mat with dual-stage thermostat controller. Heating elements warm only the physical graft union to 72°F while the root systems sit in cool ambient air, preventing premature bud break before vascular connection is complete.

Measure the graft union, not just room temperature

A thermostat setting is not necessarily the temperature inside wrapped unions. Sensor placement, insulation, airflow, mat contact, day/night cycling, and calibration can create a meaningful difference. Before loading valuable grafts, run the empty setup long enough to observe the range at the intended union position and keep water away from electrical connections.

What the temperature table cannot predict

  • Whether the scion and stock are biologically compatible.
  • Whether the cambial edges were aligned and held still.
  • Whether the wood was alive, hydrated, disease-free, and truly dormant.
  • Whether free water, oxygen limitation, or contamination will cause decay.
  • Whether warming the union will push buds before roots can support growth.
