How this tool works

The union is modelled as a cylinder. Pitch = applied tape width × (1 − overlap). After one full anchoring turn, whole spiral turns cover the remaining union length. Each spiral turn has length √((π × diameter)² + pitch²). Relaxed length = applied length ÷ measured stretch, plus your allowance.

Assumptions & Physical Constraints:

Illustrative geometry, not a manufacturer dispensing specification. Measure width after stretching because film narrows. Stretch defaults to 1× deliberately; material choice never assumes a maximum stretch. End seals, knots, irregular bark and extra layers need additional allowance. Currency is whatever you enter, with no conversion.

Reproducible example: 0.5-inch diameter, 1-inch applied width, 2-inch coverage, 50% overlap, 1× stretch and 20% allowance = 5.84 inches relaxed tape per graft (rounded). For 25 grafts, allow 3.71 metres before rounding up to whole rolls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does biodegradable tape mean I can skip aftercare?

No. Inspect every wrap for constriction, especially thick layers or shaded unions. Follow the exact product instructions. Do not cut into bark or disturb an insecure union.

Why does changing the brand not change the result?

Maximum advertised stretch is not a safe working stretch. Measure your actual strip and applied width; enter those values so the estimate reflects how you wrap.
