Biological Mechanism & Horticultural Rules

Matching caliper on dormant wood allows the interlocking tongues of a Whip & Tongue graft to provide structural rigidity and maximum cambial surface contact. When the rootstock is significantly thicker than the scion, Cleft or Bark Inlay grafts must be used with cambiums aligned flush along one edge.

Assumptions & Physical Constraints:

Assumes cuts are executed in a single smooth pass with a razor-sharp single-bevel grafting blade sterilized with 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Scenario: 1/4" pencil-thick scion + 2" limb in early spring ➔ Cleft Graft with scion wedge inserted on outer edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose whip-and-tongue instead of a simple splice?

The interlocking cuts can improve mechanical stability and provide a longer matching cut surface when scion and stock are similar in diameter, but accurate cambial alignment remains essential.
